A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step
In 2008, Voice of the Child – Child Contact Centre was first set up in a three-bedroom terrace house on Northern Road, Slough. Berkshire.
Phoenix-Rises Tabot-Ojong (Connie) the Founder, a Psychotherapist and Children & Family Social Worker was concerned about a shortage of family-oriented Child Contact Centres and Early Intervention Services for vulnerable families involved with Local Authority Child Protection Services.
She was struck by the number of children and families in need who fell below the threshold criteria for Local Authority statutory support. Particularly, the emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties affecting children and young people caught in the middle of chronic conflict between separated parents. She was equally struck by the lack of cultural competent and sensitive services for black and minority ethic families involved with Social Services Children Services and the implications of disadvantage for child and family well being. She felt inspired her to setup the Child Contact Centre and Family Intervention Centre
In April 2010, Voice of the Child became a UK Registered. Due to an exponential increase in demand for services, the organisation relocated to a purposefully designed fourteen family room premises, Unit 19/20 Progress Business Centre, Slough.
In October 2010, Slough MP Fiona Mactaggart officially opened the new Child Contact Centre.
In 2015, Voice of the Child relocated to Unit 8 Beacon tree Plaza. Gillette Way, Reading. Berkshire. Located along the M4 Corridor, Voice of the Child is the only recognised Nationally Accredited Child Contact & Family Support Centre within a 75 miles radius of Reading, offering a wide range of Child Contact Intervention Services across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and the South East.
Whilst support is offered to parents and children together and individually, the primary objective is to safeguard and maximise the well being of the child. Services have consistently evolved to reflect the dynamic needs of families and the identified gaps in the delivery of services. In 2012, the charity gained the highest Enhanced Accreditation and Membership with the National Association of Child Contact Centres and this was reviewed and renewed in November 2018. The organisation remains the only Nationally Accredited Child Contact Centre within a 75 miles radius providing Supervised, Supported and Escorted Contacts and Handover 5days a week.
We receive referrals from individual families and over 70 Solicitor firms, 20 family courts, CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service), NYAS, and over 100 Local authorities across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Surrey and beyond.
Over the last 10 years, we have established partnerships with over ten UK Universities as we offer 30, 70 or 100 days placements to undergraduate and post graduate Social Work students as part of their training towards a degree in social works.
